We all know that if you start taking credit cards you will start selling more and making more. It doesn't matter whether you have a 'bricks and mortar' business or whether you operate online. It's not rocket science, is it?

In theory thats how it works, but like many things in life there's a potential pitfall and that is who you choose as your merchant account provider.

It's therefore vital that you know these 3 points before you begin choosing which merchant account you'll use:

1. Merchant Account Providers don't charge standard rates despite what they may say. The rate that you finally get charged depends on many different factors.

The trick is that a Merchant Account Provider will show you a really low rate in the hope that you will sign a contract. This rate is introductory however, and rises in the future.

2. Many providers will want you to sign up to long term contracts with large termination fees if you want to leave within the contract time frame. You dont have to sign up to a long term contract. There are excellent providers that dont require this and the fact that they don't is an indication that they provide a very high level of service.

Unfortunately for many people, once youre in a long term contract a Merchant Account Provider can effectively treat you how they like.

3.Check out what support they will give you very carefully. Everybody needs support from there merchant account provider so make sure this is a priority. A company needs to offer you specialist teams for sale inquiries, customer service and technical issues.

That way you can be sure that there is a specialist on hand no matter what your problem is, and that you do not lose any business.
