We all know that if you start taking credit cards you will start selling more and making more. It doesn't matter whether you have a 'bricks and mortar' business or whether you operate online. It's not rocket science, is it?

Well yes it should be true, but the one factor that can seriously affect this is the quality of your Merchant Account Provider. Pick the wrong one and you could have serious problems.

The 3 most important things you need to know to pick a good credit card merchant account are:

1. Merchant Account Providers don't charge standard rates despite what they may say. The rate that you finally get charged depends on many different factors.

The trick is that a Merchant Account Provider will show you a really low rate in the hope that you will sign a contract. This rate is introductory however, and rises in the future.

2. Long Term Contracts. Don't sign one! Many companies out there will insist that it's the industry standard and that you need to do it. Don't, most have expensive termination fees if you want or need to get out early and a good company with a high level of service will not need a long term contract.

Another common occurrence in long contracts is a low level of service because the company knows they can get away with it.

3.Check out what support they will give you very carefully. Everybody needs support from there merchant account provider so make sure this is a priority. A company needs to offer you specialist teams for sale inquiries, customer service and technical issues.

If you ensure that they have this level of support, whenever you have any issues you're back up running again and making money ASAP.
