It seems that there are always times when a carpet needs deep cleaning. Soiling due to shoes, bare feet, spills, and pets just can't be dealt with using a regular vacuum cleaner. Sweepers pick up about 80% of the dirt and grime, but over time the other 20% begins to accumulate and needs to be dealt with.
Carpet cleaning can be achieved by three different methods: steam cleaning, chemical/dry cleaning, and stain removal. These methods can be "do it yourself" or can be done by professional cleaning companies. Stain removal is probably the most common form of "at home" carpet cleaning. Food stains can be eliminated with shaving cream or brake cleaner. Neither should be rubbed in and the shaving cream should be rinsed with a vinegar and water solution (1 cup vinegar to 2 and one half cups hot water) while the brake fluid should be removed with soap and water. Everyone knows that club soda gets rid of red wines stains, but most people don't know that red dye stains can be removed with a solution of water and peroxide. Just apply to the stain, let set 30 minutes, and then rinse with the vinegar/water solution. Oil, grease, and magic markers require WD40 or industrial cleaners such as Orange Clean or DeSolvit. Ink is eliminated with rubbing alcohol (blot, set for 30 minutes, soap and water rinse). Freeze gum with ice cubes and then use the blunt edge of a knife to chip away. Wax is removed from carpets with the use of an iron. The "waxy" area should be covered with a plain paper towel or a plain paper bag (do not use anything with writing because the dye will transfer to the carpet). Set the iron to a medium or low setting so as to not scorch the carpet. Iron over the towel for 2 seconds. If the wax does not come up, then move the towel around and iron again. Whole carpet cleaning requires the use of a steam cleaner or a chemical cleaning system. Steam cleaners can be rented or purchased from stores such as grocery and hardware. Cleaning products can be purchased there as well. The first step in cleaning the carpet is to vacuum as usual. Pre treatment of heavily soiled areas is the next step. If you are cleaning up animal urine, then treat the area with a mixture of vinegar and peroxide in boiling water (1 cup white vinegar and one quarter cup of peroxide is needed per every 1 gallon of boiling water). Let the treatment set for 1 hour before steam cleaning. After any pre-treatment, fill the steam cleaner's reservoir with hot tap water. If you are cleaning up pet accidents, use the vinegar/peroxide/water solution in the reservoir. The carpet shampoo should be used according to the steamer's instructions. If you are cleaning urine, do not use shampoo during the first cleaning. Steam cleaners have a spray function and a vacuum function. The vacuum function runs constantly while the spray function can be turned on and off. Go over the same area of carpet twice, one with the spray function on and then once with it off to remove most of the water from the carpet (if you are doing urine removal, you will first have to vacuum out the vinegar and peroxide solution before doing the spray and vacuum routine). You are done when a hand placed on the carpet does not come away with droplets. The carpet should only be slightly damp and feels "wrung out." The carpets need to dry overnight before anyone can walk on them again. Urine removal requires a second cleaning the next day, this time with the shampoo. Then another night of drying is needed. Once dry, baking soda should be sprinkled on the carpet to draw up any residual urine. The baking soda can we vacuumed up using your regular sweeper. Dry carpet cleaning involves using a moistened granular cleaner that is sprinkled and then vacuumed up. There are also professional companies that will dry clean your carpets such as ChemDry. Steam cleaning can be professionally done in Cleveland through many different carpet cleaning companies.
