Industry's need for better qualified personnel is enhanced, as human beings become vastly more reliant on PC's in the modern world. Trainees looking to kick off an Information Technology career normally haven't a clue which direction to follow, let alone which market to achieve their certification in. Perusing long lists of different and confusing job titles is next to useless. Surely, most of us have no idea what our next-door neighbours do at work each day - so we're in the dark as to the ins and outs of any specific IT role. Often, the key to unlocking this issue properly flows from an in-depth chat, covering several areas: * Your personal interests and hobbies - these often point towards what things will give you the most reward. * What time-frame are you looking at for retraining? * Have you thought about salary vs the travel required? * Understanding what typical IT types and sectors are - plus how they're different to each other. * How much time you'll have available to commit getting qualified. For most people, dissecting all these ideas requires a good chat with someone that can investigate each area with you. And we don't just mean the accreditations - but also the commercial requirements and expectations also. You should only consider learning courses which will lead to industry recognised qualifications. There's a plethora of trainers promoting their own 'in-house' certificates which are worthless when you start your job-search. Unless the accreditation comes from a conglomerate such as Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco or CompTIA, then you'll probably find it could have been a waste of time and effort - because no-one will recognise it. An area that's often missed by potential students weighing up a particular programme is the concept of 'training segmentation'. This basically means the method used to break up the program for drop-shipping to you, which vastly changes how you end up. Students often think it makes sense (with training often lasting 2 or 3 years to achieve full certification,) for a training company to release a single section at a time, as you complete each part. Although: What if there are reasons why you can't finish each and every exam? And what if the order provided doesn't meet your requirements? Due to no fault of yours, you might take a little longer and not get all the study materials as a result. The ideal solution is to have every piece of your study pack posted to you immediately; the complete package! Thus avoiding any future problems that could impede your capacity to get everything done. One useful service provided by many trainers is a Job Placement Assistance program. It's intention is to assist your search for your first position. The fact of the matter is it's not as hard as some people make out to land a job - once you're trained and certified; the shortage of IT personnel in Britain looks after that. You would ideally have advice and support about your CV and interviews though; and we'd recommend any student to get their CV updated as soon as training commences - don't put it off for when you're ready to start work. It can happen that you haven't even passed your first exam when you'll secure your initial junior support position; although this is not possible unless you've posted your CV on job sites. Generally, you'll receive quicker service from a local IT focused recruitment consultant or service than you'll experience from any course provider's recruitment division, because they'll know the area better. A regular grievance of a number of training providers is how much trainees are prepared to work to become certified, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the role they've acquired skills for.
