If you want to be a great manager--not a good one, but a truly great one--you need to have your hands on the right data. That's the bottom line. Good managers know what's happening. Successful management isn't just being a great motivator (although that does have value). It's not about being a good judge of talent either (although, again, that doesn't hurt). You see, things like that only matter if and when you have the right data in front of you and the ability to interpret it.

You see, things like that only matter if and when you have the right data in front of you and the ability to interpret it. "Act Your Wage" simply means you think and act the wage you want to earn before you do. You're probably familiar with the expressions "average is as average does" and "great is as great does", correct? What if I told you "What you do is who you become"? This is a difficult concept to understand primarily because most don't want to understand it. But the truth is if you want a Tenant Rep assignment normally reserved for a Top Producer you must act like a Top Producer. Easier said than done. Take a Behavioral Assessment Behavioral assessments such as Myers-Briggs, Emotional Intelligence, DiSC, and the TKI Conflict Mode Instrument are great tools for improving people skills. These assessments can provide insights in areas such as communications, conflict-resolution, motivation, team-building, and other areas. The key is to use individuals who are professionally certified to administer these instruments. There are many business professionals who have not been assessed properly and this only adds to their confusion on how best to work with others. When you have the data, you're making informed decisions based on reality. You're not rolling the dice. Management by the seat of your pants rarely works. The best in the business get the job done because they understand what's really happening. Their collecting data. They're synthesizing it and their reaching conclusions based on it. Are you on your way to becoming a successful manager or are you just hoping your hunches pay off? If you can't answer that question loud and clear with a statement that you're on the right track, it's time to start changing the way you do business. It's time to start pulling in that information and studying it. You need to know the who, what, when, why and how of your business. Then you can stop guessing and start managing like a pro!
