I started my law firm about 8 months ago. Thinking about where the next client is going to come from, taking on every role in the company, and trying to be the best lawyer possible are challenges I face every day. But it can be done, and it can be done successfully.

After studying successful small law firms and other successful small business, I've come to realize that for the most part successful small law firm owners have three traits that promote their success. I've seen that most successful law firm owners are self-reliant; they are not afraid to fail; and they are as excited about the business of law as they are the law itself. Want to know more? The ability to push yourself when no one is there will be critical to your success in the early stages. When you are making cold calls all day or pushing out promotional letter after promotional letter (or online article) it will be hard to stay the course. But successful law firm owners have that inner drive to keep going, to push themselves every day. This is probably the hardest thing there is with starting a law firm, and it's the reason many don't survive.

Nobody likes to fail. It sucks. We look stupid. We look foolish. And, if we fail, it probably means we lost a lot of money along the way. But, you can't succeed if you don't try. Without failure, there can be no success. Having the guts to go out there on your own and make a go of it is an important quality to have when starting a law firm. You are going to have to make decisions about your company that will push it in one direction or another. Don't be afraid to fail.

When I first started a law firm, I didn't know much about the business of law. I didn't know how to market. I didn't think about what went in to signing up a client, what happened after they signed up, or how to streamline that process to make my business more profitable. But I learned quickly, mostly because I was interested in it. Understanding the business side of a law practice is important for success.

Opening a law firm is amazing. It's a thrill ride. You will have a lot of ups and probably a few downs. But if you have what it takes to be successful it will be something you'll cherish forever. Will you be successful?
